Intimate areas treated

Bikini line to full Brazilian: choose your area

Every woman's preference is different. The area is marked out with you before the first session, so you decide exactly what is treated and what is kept.

Bikini line

Hair that shows outside your usual swimwear or underwear line. The quickest intimate area, about 10 minutes.

Extended / high bikini

Higher and deeper than the bikini line, for high-cut swimwear, activewear and lingerie.

Brazilian

The front, outer labia and between the buttocks, with the option to keep a small strip or triangle.

Full Brazilian (Hollywood)

All hair removed from the intimate area, including the perianal area.

Inner thighs & bikini crease

Where ingrown hairs, razor bumps and darkening from shaving tend to collect.

Lower tummy line

The line of hair below the navel, often treated together with a Brazilian.

Why a lady doctor

Why many women choose a female doctor for Brazilian laser

For most women, the hardest part of a Brazilian is not the laser. It is walking into the room. Seeing a female doctor in a private treatment room makes that easier, and you can ask anything without feeling rushed or judged.

It is also a medical laser procedure on delicate skin, so a doctor's assessment matters. Before the first session Dr Mavis checks your skin type and any pigmentation, medications that make skin sensitive to light, a history of keloid scarring, and a history of cold sores or genital herpes, since heat can trigger a flare and preventive medication may be advised. Hormonal causes of hair growth such as PCOS are discussed too.

Mayo Clinic advises choosing a medically qualified, appropriately trained practitioner for laser hair removal rather than a provider where non-medical staff perform the procedure.[1]

Intimate skin & skin tone

Brazilian laser on darker intimate skin

Skin in the bikini and intimate area is often darker than elsewhere on the body, particularly in Asian skin, and the hair there is coarse and deep. That combination is exactly where the choice of wavelength matters.

The Clarity II has two lasers in one: a 755nm Alexandrite, suited to lighter skin and finer hair, and a 1064nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG, which passes the surface pigment and reaches deeper follicles. The manufacturer describes 755nm as suited to Fitzpatrick skin types I to III and 1064nm as the safer option for types IV to VI.[3] Both wavelengths are cleared by the US FDA for permanent hair reduction on all skin types, Fitzpatrick I to VI, including tanned skin.[2]

“Darker bikini skin is not a reason to avoid laser. It is a reason to choose the right wavelength.”Dr Mavis Pak

In a randomised controlled trial published in the British Journal of Dermatology, a long-pulsed 1064nm Nd:YAG laser was more effective than IPL for hair removal in dark skin, with both rated safe.[4] A systematic review and meta-analysis of lasers for unwanted hair in skin of colour has examined the same question across many studies.[5] Dr Mavis can switch wavelength within one session, for example 1064nm on the Brazilian area and 755nm on the upper lip.

Shaving vs waxing vs laser

Your first Brazilian session

What actually happens, step by step

  1. Before: shave the area the day before or that morning. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for about 4 weeks before, and avoid tanning the area for 2 weeks. Book outside your period if you can.
  2. Consultation: Dr Mavis goes through your skin, medical history and medications, and you agree together which areas to treat and what to keep.
  3. Privacy: you change in a private room and disposable underwear is provided, adjusted as each area is treated.
  4. Treatment: the laser is applied to the hair-bearing skin only, with cryogen cooling on every pulse. A bikini line takes about 10 minutes and a full Brazilian about 15 to 20.
  5. After: mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are normal and usually settle within hours to a day. Wear loose cotton underwear, and skip saunas, hot yoga, swimming and anything that causes friction for a day or two.
  6. Over the course: treated hairs shed over 1 to 3 weeks. Most women need about 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart, with occasional maintenance later.[1]
“Laser treats the hair-bearing skin of the bikini area, never the delicate inner skin.”Dr Mavis Pak

Treatment is postponed during pregnancy. Side effects are usually mild and temporary, but changes in skin colour can occur, especially on darker skin or after sun exposure, and blistering or scarring are uncommon.[1] This is why settings are chosen for your skin rather than a preset.

Other areas

Underarms, face, legs and more

Many women add other areas to their Brazilian course: underarms (a few minutes for both sides), upper lip, chin and jawline (including hormonally driven hair with PCOS), arms and legs, the back and the abdomen.

Frequently asked questions

Brazilian & bikini laser hair removal: your questions

Is there a lady doctor for Brazilian laser hair removal in Singapore?⌄
Yes. Dr Mavis Pak is a female aesthetic doctor in Singapore who offers Brazilian, bikini line and full intimate-area laser hair removal for women. Treatment is done in a private room after a medical consultation, using the dual-wavelength Clarity II laser. Appointments are by WhatsApp on +65 8815 3008.
What is the difference between bikini line, extended bikini and Brazilian laser hair removal?⌄
A bikini line treats hair that shows outside normal swimwear. An extended or high bikini goes higher and deeper for high-cut swimwear and lingerie. A Brazilian treats the front, the outer labia and between the buttocks, and you can choose to keep a small strip or triangle. A full Brazilian, sometimes called a Hollywood, removes all hair including the perianal area.
Can I keep a landing strip or a small triangle?⌄
Yes. The area left untreated is marked out with you before the session, so you can keep a strip, a triangle or any shape you prefer. Because laser reduces hair long term, it is worth deciding carefully before the first session.
Is Brazilian laser hair removal painful?⌄
Most women feel a quick snap or warm prick with each pulse. The bikini area is more sensitive than the legs because the hair is coarse and dense, so the first one or two sessions are usually the most noticeable. The Clarity II uses cryogen cooling with each pulse, and the sensation eases as the hair thins over the course.
How many sessions does a Brazilian need?⌄
Most women need a course of about 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, because laser only affects hairs in their active growth phase. Mayo Clinic notes that most people need 4 to 8 treatments. Coarse, dark bikini hair usually responds well; hormonally driven hair, for example with PCOS, may need more sessions and occasional maintenance.
Is laser hair removal safe for darker bikini and intimate skin?⌄
Intimate skin is often darker than the rest of the body, especially in Asian skin. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength passes the surface pigment and reaches the follicle more deeply, which is why it is the usual choice for darker skin. The Clarity II's 1064nm wavelength is cleared by the US FDA for all skin types, Fitzpatrick I to VI, including tanned skin.
Can I have Brazilian laser during my period?⌄
Most women prefer to schedule bikini and Brazilian sessions outside their period, and the area is more sensitive just before and during it. If your period arrives unexpectedly, WhatsApp to move the appointment.
Do I need to shave before a Brazilian laser session?⌄
Yes. Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your session, but do not wax, pluck, thread or use epilators for about 4 weeks before, because laser needs the root to be present in the follicle. Avoid tanning the area for two weeks before.
Can laser help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps in the bikini area?⌄
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons women choose bikini laser. As the hair becomes finer and sparser, there are fewer hairs to curl back into the skin, so ingrown hairs, razor bumps and the darkening that comes from repeated shaving often improve over the course.
Can I have Brazilian laser hair removal while pregnant or breastfeeding?⌄
Laser hair removal is postponed during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, tell Dr Mavis at the consultation so she can advise on timing.
How long does a Brazilian laser session take?⌄
A bikini line takes about 10 minutes and a full Brazilian about 15 to 20 minutes, after the consultation at the first visit. You can go back to work straight after.
Is laser hair removal permanent?⌄
Laser gives long-term hair reduction rather than a promise of zero hair. The Clarity II is FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction, which means a stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow over time. Many treated follicles stop growing hair altogether, but hormonal changes can activate new follicles over the years, so occasional maintenance is common.
What is the difference between IPL and laser for the bikini area?⌄
IPL uses a broad spectrum of light, while a medical laser delivers one precise wavelength. For coarse bikini hair on darker intimate skin, a long-pulsed 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is usually preferred; a randomised controlled trial in the British Journal of Dermatology found it more effective than IPL for hair removal in dark skin.
Which other areas does Dr Mavis treat?⌄
Besides the bikini and Brazilian areas, Dr Mavis treats the underarms, upper lip, chin and face, arms, legs, back and abdomen. Different wavelengths can be used for different areas in the same session.
