Suitability depends on your skin type, Fitzpatrick score, and specific concern. Asian skin (Fitzpatrick III–V) requires careful laser selection to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Dr Mavis Pak has extensive experience with Asian skin and uses parameters specifically calibrated for darker tones.

Which laser is right for my skin concern? ↓

The right laser depends on your skin type, Fitzpatrick score, and specific concern. Dr Mavis Pak assesses all of these at consultation before recommending any modality. She will never recommend a laser unsuitable for your skin tone — particularly important for Asian skin where incorrect parameters can worsen pigmentation.

Is laser treatment safe for Asian skin? ↓

Yes, with the right device and settings. Asian skin (Fitzpatrick III–V) carries higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with aggressive laser settings. Dr Mavis Pak uses devices with established Asian-skin protocols — including the Fotona StarWalker PQX and DEKA Toro, both designed for versatile use across darker skin tones.

How many sessions do I need? ↓

This depends entirely on the concern. Pigmentation may respond in 2–4 picolaser sessions. Acne scarring typically requires 4–6 sessions of fractional laser or RF microneedling. Hair removal requires 6–8+ sessions. Dr Mavis Pak will give you a realistic estimate at consultation.

What is the difference between picolaser and Q-switched laser? ↓

Both shatter pigment particles with short laser pulses, but picosecond lasers like the Fotona StarWalker PQX deliver pulses 100x shorter than nanosecond Q-switched devices. This creates a predominantly photoacoustic effect — shattering pigment more finely, with less heat in surrounding tissue, lower post-inflammatory risk, and faster clearance.

Is there downtime after laser treatment? ↓

Downtime varies by modality. Picolaser toning has minimal downtime — redness lasting 1–2 hours. Fractional laser resurfacing involves 2–4 days of mild redness and flaking. CO2 ablative resurfacing (Tetra Pro) involves 5–7 days of social downtime. Dr Mavis Pak will discuss the expected course for your specific treatment.

Can laser treatment permanently remove melasma? ↓

Melasma is a complex, hormonally-driven condition that is managed rather than permanently cured. Laser can significantly reduce its appearance, but melasma tends to recur with sun exposure or hormonal triggers. Long-term management combines laser with diligent SPF and appropriate topical agents.

Can I have laser treatment if I'm on medication? ↓

Certain medications affect laser suitability — particularly photosensitising drugs, retinoids, and isotretinoin (Roaccutane). Patients on isotretinoin should wait at least 6 months before ablative laser treatment. Dr Mavis Pak will review your medication history at consultation.
